THE THREETLES FREAKOUT

Uppermill Civic Hall, Uppermill
by Billy J. Shears
(The Threetles C.EddieM)
Oldham's finest Beatles celebration (not tribute) band returned to the stage with a prestigous gig at Uppermill Civic Hall.

The Threetles Freakout was a near 500 capacity sell out & fans were asked to make the gig extra special by dressing up for the occasion. As it turned out the Civic Hall was awash with beads, kaftans, head bands and for one night only the summer of love was revisited.

The Threetles started as a three piece but have since expanded to a five piece with the addition of Simon on drums & Andy on keyboards & sitar, name me another Beatles celebration band with a sitar player. Tonight they were to expand yet again to a 12 piece but that's another story:-).

We arrived at the Civic Hall to be greeted by the magnificently decorated hall that really set the stage for the Threetles to perform three sets of mid to late Beatles material.

After an entertaining introduction from three young lads in pepper outfits the band struck the first chord of A Hard Day's Night the earliest song they did until a rocking encore.

There were so many highlights in their three sets it was untrue, they included A Day in the Life, Hey Bulldog, Tomorrow Never Knows (complete with megaphone vocal), Dear Prudence, Drive My Car, Fixing A Hole, I Am the Walrus, Paperback  Writer, Rain, Here Comes the Sun, We Can Work It Out, a tour de force version of Get Back and Across the Universe. I could go on, and probably have, but the Threetles certainly delivered the goods to a packed crowd.

After a suprise appearance by a local ukelele band led by Andy Housley and supported by The Threetles the band returned for their third set of the night.

The summer of love continued and the heat was turned up as the band was joined by a seven piece brass section. The Threetles had a large section of the crowd up and dancing to All You Need is Love and an arm waving Hey Jude.

The Threetles did three encores and performed rousing versions of She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand and Twist and Shout from the early Beatles era that sent the crowd home happy and out into the hot summer night.

The summer of love had returned for one night only thanks to Oldham's finest Beatles celebration (not tribute) band
