If you walk down the steps of the World Famous Cavern Club on Mathew Street you’ll still hear the sounds of Rock ‘n’ Roll & Merseybeat played by the Caverns’ resident bands including the Cavern Club Beatles featuring the Coburn brothers, Jimmy & Tony, The Rockits & resident Merseybeat band The Shakers.

The first EP by the Shakers 'Cavern Stompin' was released in June 2013 with four tracks from the birth of Merseybeat.
Some Other Guy, Slow Down, Bad Boy & Roll Over Beethoven were all covered and recorded by the Beatles but also performed live by bands in the clubs and cellars during the Merseybeat era. The Shakers stomp all over this EP and more was to come the following month. |
Released just a month later the Shakers 'Mach Shau' is a four track cracker as the energy generated on by them comes across loud and clear. Another four classics from the classic Merseybeat era.

Cavern Club resident Merseybeat band The Shakers from Liverpool were formed 13 years ago and can be seen in the best of cellars Cavern stompin' most weekends during the year.
After two EP releases they returned to the studio in 2015 to record their first album 'A Whole Lotta Shakers' that resulted in a vinyl album release quickly followed by a CD with two extra bonus tracks.
One of the difficulties recording classic Merseybeat material in the present day is to capture the energy of the original versions in a modern studio. Recordings such as A Taste Of Honey, Don't Ever Change, Love Potion #9, and Soldier Of Love conjure up sounds of the Beatles, the Searchers and the Merseybeats, hard acts to follow!
The Shakers also made it more difficult for themselves by recording half a dozen original compositions in the 60's style and needed to produce an album that would not only appeal to lovers of original 60's music but also today's generation lovers of 60's style music.
I'm not saying they've made a classic beat album but one reviewer was disappointed that the band included cover versions on the album because their own songs are so good.
Their recordings really capture the 60's beat and openers Hold Me and Please Mister Man set the tone for an album that contains a generous 17 tracks, although the last four songs replicate the Mach Shau! EP but that's not to devalue what's a great debut album, a magic mix of Merseybeat inspired beat and ballads.
