THE BEATLES HORNSEY ROAD WITH MARK LEWISOHN
ALEXANDRA THEATRE, BIRMINGHAM

REVIEW

When the Beatles Hornsby Road show was announced featuring Mark Lewisohn it seemed like an ambitious project. I mean, basically it's a presentation on the Beatles Abbey Road album, but in a theatre?
There again, if Dave Gorman can present a show using powerpoint then maybe it could work.

  • Lesson 1, don't underestimate the power of the Beatles.
  • Lesson 2, don't drag your feet on buying tickets for a Beatles event.
  • Finally, Lesson 3 and one I always abide by, don't believe what you read.

The Beatles popularity has grown with each decade. It was recently announced that the band are more popular in 10's than they were in the 00's, nearly sixty years since they first appeared in the charts with their first single Love Me Do.

Still unconvinced that venues would sell out, we delayed buying tickets for the event.
Suddenly, our 'local' theatres 'Home' in Manchester and the 'Epstein Theatre' in Liverpool both put up 'sold out' signs before we could buy tickets, creating a panic in this household.
A bit like E.T. the Mrs rang 'Home' to see if there was any 'returns', "no but I'll put you on the waiting list" came the reply.

I read in an article on the web that the Hornsby Road show had a 2 hour running time with a 15 minute interval. With this in mind we took the plunge and booked two tickets for the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham.

According to Google Maps it was a 4 minute walk from the railway station to the theatre.
I worked out Hornsby Road would finish at around 9.45pm, with a train back to Manchester at 10.30pm there was no need to stay over in Birmingham, wrong!
Whoever wrote the article that the Hornsby Road show had a 2 hour running time should either get a new watch or learn to read the time as Mark was still clicking his powerpoint presentation as we 'powered' our way back to Birmingham's New Street station.

A couple of weeks ago, our wait was over at 'Home' in Manchester when the Mrs received a call offering two tickets for Hornsby Road at HOME!
It felt fantastic to pay out another £25 each for tickets to see the last 20 minutes of the show:-)

Actually, Hornsby Road is an excellent production and Mark Lewisohn is a brilliant presenter. Among the highlights is of course hearing the Beatles outtakes through the cinema's high tech system.

That was it then, well you would have thought so, but in September 2019 we paid our deposits for Liverpool International Beatleweek 2020. The line up was announced yesterday. Here'a quote from their email
'We are excited to be able to bring Mark Lewisohn's Hornsey Road show to our Beatleweek audience - one not to be missed.

I'm a firm believer that things come in three's, especially lessons but this is ridiculous.

See you in August 2020 Mark...
